On Saturday, September 21, 2024, Datagarda (PT Data Prima Global Servitama) held a successful virtual event titled Introduction to Data Center Design and Fundamentals. The session was part of the Kapita Selekta Curriculum at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI), and was led by Ir. Ruli Asrul ATD® CDCS®, a highly respected expert in the field of data center projects and construction. The event saw an impressive turnout with around 70 participants, including students, faculty members, and industry professionals.
The event aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge about the technical and operational aspects of modern data centers, emphasizing global standards and best practices.
Key points covered in the session include:
-
Evolution of Data Centers:
Participants learned about the history of data centers and how they have evolved from basic server rooms to sophisticated infrastructures that support cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
-
Core Components and Infrastructure:
The session discussed the essential components of a data center, such as power supply systems, cooling systems, fire suppression, cabling, and network infrastructure. Emphasis was placed on the importance of integrating these components efficiently to ensure the data center’s optimal performance.
-
Redundancy and Availability:
One of the critical topics discussed was redundancy, where the speaker elaborated on how to build reliable and highly available data centers. Redundant systems ensure there is no single point of failure, which is crucial in maintaining 24/7 operations.
-
Standards and Best Practices:
The session also introduced participants to international standards for data centers such as the TIA-942 standard and other global benchmarks that guide data center design, construction, and operation.
-
Cost and Scalability Considerations:
A significant portion of the discussion focused on how companies can approach the decision of building their own data centers versus outsourcing. This topic generated insightful questions from participants regarding the scalability, cost-effectiveness, and long-term benefits of each approach.
The interactive format of the session allowed participants to ask in-depth questions about practical data center challenges, including maintenance without downtime, hardware aging, and strategies for implementing redundancy on a budget.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with participants praising the practical insights shared by the speaker. The real-world applications of the theories discussed made the session an invaluable learning experience.
Stay tuned for more exciting events on data center technologies and IT infrastructure by Datagarda.
